Lazarus, Emma

(22 jul. 1849, Nueva York, N.Y., EE.UU.–19 nov. 1887, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Escritora estadounidense. Nació en el seno de una refinada familia judía, circunstancia que le hizo aprender diversos idiomas y conocer los clásicos desde su infancia. Su primer libro (1867) captó la atención de Ralph Waldo Emerson, con quien entabló en lo sucesivo una relación epistolar. Escribió un romance en prosa y tradujo los poemas y baladas de Heinrich Heine. Asumió la defensa de los judíos perseguidos 1881 y comenzó a trabajar para socorrer a los nuevos inmigrantes que llegaban a EE.UU. Los célebres versos finales de su poema The New Colossus [El nuevo coloso] (1883) fueron inscritos en la base de la Estatua de la Libertad, en 1886.
